I shuffle my entire library sometimes, and while I love running Cover Stream in full screen mode, I think there’s a big of a bug when picking out a specific song while shuffling. Cover Stream behaves fine if I start the shuffle from iTunes and then enter Cover Stream’s full screen mode, but if I pick out a specific song from an album in the middle of the shuffle, Cover Stream gets stuck shuffling songs only from that album. I couldn’t find a preference to adjust this behavior, so I’m thinking this is a bug. Am I missing something, or can you fix this?

Thanks. This is actually expected behavior. Songs selected from the playlist named “Cover Stream” in Cover Stream (this playlist equals your entire music library) are copied to a temporary playlist in iTunes, thus breaking the shuffling. This is only the case for the “Cover Stream” playlist, so what you could do is to make a new playlist containing your entire library and shuffle that playlist instead. Since this playlist is a regular user playlist it will be treated as such, and not considered to be a “special case”.

On second thought, we could very well add a preference setting to override this behavior and play library music continuously. Some users prefer it your way, no doubt about it.

While I’m not a huge fan of the “just make it a preference!” approach to software development, in this case I think your users would appreciate a preference to toggle this behavior instead of having to work around it. If I start shuffling my library in iTunes, I can manually select a song to play, but allow the entire library to continue shuffling afterwards. Breaking this behavior in Cover Stream feels jarring and frustrating, and it doesn’t make any sense when coming over from iTunes.
Thanks a lot for proposing this idea. I would even be happy if you left the preference off by default. If the majority of your users prefer the way Cover Stream works right now, that’s totally understandable.
